Take one step at a time. We all understand what this means. Look at the big picture, but don't let it overwhelm you.
Instead, take one step at a time, do the next right thing, and you will arrive at your destination.
It’s an easy-to-apply tool to add to our perception-shifting basket and one that makes life so much easier if we use it.
For example, it is easier to take one step at a time while running up a hill than it is to look up and notice how much further there is to go.
One step at a time, one foot in front of another, and the top of the hill arrives almost without noticing.
I saw evidence of how powerful this concept is, even if you are as light as a bird because bird feet did it.
We have a railing that goes around our deck, and after a snowstorm, the snow on the railing was over 12 inches high.
One section of the railing is a landing area for the birds as they fly to the feeder hanging under the roof of our porch.
These are little birds that barely make a mark in the snow when they touch down.
The next day after the snowstorm, the snow on the railing was still over 12 inches high, except for one section. The snow had compacted to only a few inches where the birds had landed.
It was bird feet that did this—one tiny foot at a time, one little light step at a time.
Within each of our hearts, there is a calling to do something.
Too often, we let the idea overwhelm us, and we stop listening and wall it off, hoping it will disappear.
It never does, though. Callings are relentless.
Like the water behind the dike in the Little Dutch Boy tale, there will always be a leak that will flood our lives. Or we will stand there with our finger in the hole in the dike, unable to do anything else.
Instead, we could take a cue from the birds.
The birds land on the railing to get to the food. Birds have a calling to find food.
The calling we are hearing within our hearts is the same thing. Our food is hanging there, safe under the roof, ready to feed us forever.
We don’t have to know how to do all the details of what is calling us.
We don’t have to understand what it will lead to.
We don’t have to qualify.
We don’t have to earn it.
The only thing required of us is to be willing to put one foot before the other and accept it for what it is—the calling to be who we are meant to be and do it.
To keep our promise to the world to make a difference.
This calling carries all that it needs to support and sustain it.
We can trust in this truth.
Instead of fighting who we are, we can love it.
Not love the small personality or ego that claims to represent us. Instead, we can embrace and love the qualities of God we represent.
Loving ourselves as qualities of the divine is not an ego trip.
It is a step into humility when we recognize the Truth of ourselves.
In this state of humility and love, we can get out of our way and step forward into what is calling us.
We can take those little steps, no matter how small or light, because each step makes a difference.
One right step at a time—it’s that simple.
