I hung a suet feeder on a tree branch outside my office one spring.
While at my computer, I find being surrounded by birds, such as woodpeckers, blue jays, nuthatches, titmice, chickadees, and cardinals, delightful.
When I needed to fill the feeder, I grabbed a lower branch I could reach, pulled it toward me, and started bouncing it. This brought the larger branch where I hung the feeder to my level.
As fall approached, I noticed something I hadn’t noticed before, but it was perfectly obvious in hindsight.
Did you know that as leaves drop off branches, the branches rise? Not just a few inches, feet!
One night, as I took the feeder off the branch, it popped up at least five feet higher into the air. I laughed in delight at my discovery and at the realization that I would have to find another way to grab the branch!
My imagination took off as I thought of how the tree must feel to be free and clear to begin again, to lift itself higher into the sunlight.
Letting Go Is Joyful
As the trees let go, the display of beautiful colors and raining leaves is stunning.
It's not a sad time. It is a season of harvest, abundance, and rising!
We tend to hold on to what is over or no longer useful. We hoard and gather what we don't need in case we need it someday.
Imagine trees acting like us, keeping their dead leaves and then growing a new one, keeping that one when it dies, growing another, and keeping it.
As the cycle continued, instead of rising, the branch would droop lower and lower until, eventually, the weight of it all would bring it down.
Or what if the tree let the leaves go but thought about it, gathered them back up, and tried to reattach them to themselves?
Trees—knowing that all they need is within and will create anew—release, rise, restore, and glory in their freedom.
Each tree has its timing for when and how it lets go, but it always does.
As it lets go, it reveals its internal structure, its limbs tracing beautiful shapes in the air and sky.
We—afraid that we are not like the tree—with all that we need already contained within our true nature, attach and hold onto beliefs, ideas, and decisions that weigh us down until one day we break under their weight or stop growing exhausted from the effort of holding on.
One Thing At A Time
Every leaf that dropped off the tree branch that year changed how high the branch rose.
I could see the branch lift a little more each day. Just a light little leaf, one at a time, makes a difference, and once they were all gone, the branch leaped into the air!
Sometimes, we may feel discouraged that all we can do is let go of little things, like a small unwelcome belief, a tiny fault forgiven, or a false memory dissolved.
Perhaps we think we must do big things to make a difference.
Each leaf says otherwise.
Only A Small Spark Is Needed.
In our fireplace, the logs were carefully placed but not burning.
Deep underneath them, I caught a glimpse of a small red core, so tiny it was hardly visible. As I watched, the fire exploded into action within minutes, the flames leaping up to the wood stove ceiling.
We might only have a small, deep core within that holds to what is true and beautiful. Perhaps it feels as if we have been doing that forever, yet nothing has happened.
The fire says otherwise.
Moment by Moment.
Each moment gives us something to affirm as Truth or to let go of because it's no longer needed or wanted.
All that we see and know gives us a message.
Symbols Not Things.
Whether it is a person, a spark, or a leaf, it symbolizes the qualities that make up its true substance. It’s a symbol of what’s true, not the thing itself.
As we understand this idea, it becomes easier to let go and rise and feel the freedom of knowing that all we are contains everything we need in every moment.
Feeding the fire of this knowledge, the core of our being warms and then leaps into action, and that benefits not only ourselves but also those whose lives we touch.
So go ahead let go, rise and enjoy the lightness of being, the sunlight of love, and the comforting warmth of the knowledge that you are the idea of divine Love and therefore always and eternally safe and free.
