Each day, our lives stretch before us like a blank canvas.
Every day is a fresh start filled with unlimited possibilities.
Yet many of us begin our days by returning to the past, dragging old regrets and "should-haves" into our fresh start.
We list our faults, catalog our failures, and craft resolutions aimed at fixing what we think is broken.
But what if we're getting it backward?
Fly Forward
Instead of starting by dissecting past mistakes, consider asking yourself this simple question: "What am I really good at, and how can I do more of that?"
This isn't about ignoring areas for improvement.
Instead, it's about choosing where we direct our energy and attention as we dance into new possibilities.
The Drew Brees Approach
Consider NFL quarterback Drew Brees during a crucial game against the Atlanta Falcons in 2010. Late in the fourth quarter, with his team trailing, Brees threw two consecutive interceptions – one returned for a touchdown.
The pressure was immense: hostile crowd, aggressive defense, and just 3.8 minutes remaining.
His response? "I was telling myself, 'you have to put that behind you'... stay composed and find a way to convert and go down and score."
He didn't waste precious time berating himself.
Instead, he focused on what he knew he could do – and led his team 90 yards down the field for the winning touchdown.
Growth Without Guilt
We all face our own versions of pressure:
- New projects at work
- Personal goals that stretch our comfort zone
- Relationships to nurture
- Dreams we've hesitated to pursue
Instead of starting with what you need to fix, try this instead:
1. Identify your strengths – What naturally energizes you?
2. Set intents that build on these strengths
3. Prepare to learn from setbacks without being defined by them
4. Focus on internal growth rather than external fixes
The Deeper Truth
Something powerful about your authentic self is waiting to be expressed more fully.
Instead of allowing regret, hesitation, guilt, or inaction to keep you stuck, why not start letting your possibilities and unique skills move your life forward?
This isn't about ego – it's about allowing your natural abilities and passions to flow more freely.
As Victor Hugo wrote:
*Be like the bird that, passing on her flight awhile on boughs too slight, feels them give way beneath her, and yet sings, knowing that she hath wings.*
Sing. You Have Wings.
As you stand at the beginning of every new day, why not do it differently?
- Start by acknowledging your inherent capabilities
- Set intents that excite and inspire you
- Trust in your ability to learn and adapt as you go
- Let your natural strengths guide your path
Success isn't about fixing what's wrong – it's about becoming more fully who you already are.
Let this be the day you step forward unburdened by past regrets, confident in your ability to grow and evolve naturally.
Remember: Every new day is an invitation to begin again, but how you begin makes all the difference.
Choose to begin with strength, possibility, and trust in your inherent capacity to soar.
