Coincidentally, I read two books on entirely different subjects presenting alternative scenarios of life on earth than the one we appear to be living in.
Both books had the same message, “Walk this way and experience more of how life is supposed to be.”
Think of all the prophets and leaders who have said the same thing.
Moses, Mohamed, and Gandhi said, “Walk this way to freedom.”
Mother Theresa said, “Walk this way to love and kindness.”
Martin Luther King said, “Walk this way to understanding and compassion.”
Christ Jesus said, “Walk this way to eternal Life.”
The path each of these people urged us to walk is not a material path locked into time and space but an interior spiritual path that is always beckoning us and which leads to a release of limitations.
Every person, well-known or not, walking those interior spiritual paths of freedom, love, kindness, compassion, understanding, and Life stands before us, leading the way and calling us forward.
Each of us who has stepped onto that path and is doing our best to follow the light makes it easier for the next person to walk the spiritual path and stay on it.
How do we know what path we are on in the daily details of our lives?
It’s not hard to tell the difference between the two because the material path aggressively calls to us, telling us how easy it will be.
The spiritual path makes no such loud claims.
Besides being more aggressive, the material path is also the one we have been trained to walk.
It uses both the carrot and the stick to encourage us to walk its way, and we habitually follow, even though we already know that it offers only fear, greed, irritation, and separation.
Many years ago, I had one of those “moments” you remember forever but can’t explain well to others.
I was stepping out of a building and looking one way and another to figure out which way I would go.
In that split second, I clearly saw what a different world everyone would experience if we had been trained to walk Spirit’s path.
If we had been trained to look for what appears impossible and expect it.
If we had been trained to look at a tree, a house, or a person and see their essence, their apparent materiality would no longer be a barrier to true sight.
Instead, we are trained to accept the material as solid and conventional and what appears miraculous as an apparition instead of the actual Principle of Life in action.
The moment passed, but the message still lingers.
We know the difference between the material and spiritual paths, but how do we choose which way to walk during the details of a day?
Perhaps it would go something like this: The material path beckons, saying, “There is not enough money to pay the rent, or a bill, or buy groceries, or take a trip—always not enough, so follow me to a material solution.”
The spiritual path beckons, “Look at the facts of Life. There is always enough. Be grateful for what is before you, see its essence, know the substance of enough is present now.”
In the former, we stay within the material training. Sometimes, we figure out a solution, but it is always temporary, exclusive, and leads to fear.
In the latter, we stand with Truth and follow its direction. This path is always expansive and inclusive and leads by and into Love.
This choice happens continuously during the day. Rarely is it a conscious choice.
When we don’t feel well, we could investigate why, follow the health laws, figure out where we “caught” the problem, and try various material solutions.
On the other hand, we could turn around, walk the other way, and take the spiritual path.
We could declare health as a natural asset of being the expression of the divine, listen within to hear the voice of calm reminding us of our true spiritual nature, and then take action, standing on the correct premise of the spiritual path and listening and acting from angel ideas.
To an outside observer, it may look as if both paths have us doing the same action, but the intent of the path we are walking on determines the outcome and the peace we feel in doing it.
On the spiritual path, we are guaranteed to be removed from the false laws made by the misperception of power in matter. Instead, we are on the side of One, freedom, kindness, expansion, understanding, and love.
It’s not the choice of what we do that matters as much as the choice of what path we are on when we do it.
Releasing ourselves from the material training may sometimes feel impossible, but since, in Truth, we have been nowhere but within and as the light of the Divine, it is an inevitable result.
No matter how dark the times may appear, walking the way of spirit will always bring light shining on the most practical solution. Expect it. It is not miraculous—it is the way It is.
And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. —Isa 30:21
